Window treatment options that will totally remodel your home.
Many people want to mix and match window treatment options, but is it all right to layer multiple window treatments on one window. What about using different treatments on different windows in the same room? And should every room use the same treatment to enhance cohesion and curb appeal?
The truth is that there are no complex rules on how you should mix and match your window treatments, but here are some general guidelines:
Using Two Window Treatments Over One Window.
You can add two window treatments to one window. Layering two treatments on the same window can give your walls some texture and interest. One popular choice is to pair a Pirouette, Silhouette, or Luminette shade with an off-the-shelf sheer drapery.
This allows you to block out light with needed but still have privacy when the shade is open. The goal is to decorate and frame your existing shades to create a more customized window treatment — like a roller shade. You can choose a sheer drape or side stationary panels based on your decor. However, the underlying treatment is your primary privacy and light control source.
That’s not to say that the layered look works great in every instance. For one thing, you should keep layers to a custom-fitted window treatment and a lighter drapery. Still, while layers of thick, heavy drapes with valances look great in traditional homes, today’s options can be simplified.
Same window treatments in the same room.
Window treatment consistency throughout the room makes it look complete. Most of the time, your window treatments help define a space. Therefore, when you use multiple treatments on separate windows, the room will start to seem disjointed.
Even if your room is large, you should keep every treatment consistent. And if you layer your treatments, you should maintain it all over the room. It might be best for large best to use one window treatment style. However, suppose the intent is to break up the room into several distinct areas. In that case, different coverings might define each space.
Curb appeal is essential too.
Though there are no rules for choosing window treatments, most designers use the same window treatment for the whole house, except for unique rooms. When in doubt, you should probably use one type of covering throughout.
A home with matching window treatments tends to look more uniform and appealing from the street. This is especially true with traditional-style houses, which base their outside aesthetics on symmetry. In addition, when you use the same window treatment for all your street-facing windows, viewers tend to take in the entire house as uniform instead of being distracted by a weird-looking room that uses shades instead of shutters.
Many people want their curb-facing windows to look uniform with white plantation shutters.
If you want only plantation shutters for your whole house and want a layered look, try coupling them with different drapery in separate rooms.
That way, you can still keep your windows looking similar from the curb to the outside world, but let each room have its personality on the inside.
